How Do You Read Any Book in a Day?Always wanted to know how to read a book in a day? Since you're in a hurry, I’ll try to make it quick. So, how does it work? How do you get through a book ASAP? First of all, you should understand that this way of speed reading is not suitable for everyone. It will only be useful to you if you are impatient or need to read a book for tomorrow’s class. If you meet the above criteria, you should find yourself a comfortable chair and take your time. You Don’t Have to Read a Whole BookYou don’t have to read a book from cover to cover. Instead, try reading only some parts of it — sometimes, even a few pages will be more than enough. The thing is, you often know 80% of the book’s content. So, is there any point in reading it all the way through just for the sake of the remaining 20%? That would be a sheer waste of time and effort. Frequently, there are only a couple of things in a book you’re really interested in; hence, all you need to do is find those important parts, and that would be enough! Just ask yourself, ‘Which makes more sense — to pick up one specific idea from a book and benefit from it or read a whole book and get nothing out of it? Tip 1It is OK to read a book quickly, superficially, or partly. You shouldn't have a guilty conscience about it. If you follow this simple advice, you'll save a lot of time while reading. Have a Specific Goal in MindYes, it's enough to find the bits you’re interested in. However, before you do that, you should ask yourself:
The more specific and narrower your goal is, the easier it will be for you to look for those bits. If you know exactly what information you need, it will be a lot simpler for you to find it. And conversely, if you have a vague idea about it, the task may become a major challenge for you. Putting it simply, if you don't know what you are looking for, you won't find it. Therefore, you should always ask yourself:
And, here are some simple examples of your possible reading goals:
Find a book on any of those issues that interest you, and the reading process will be much easier. Tip 2A well-formulated question or a specific purpose is the most important thing if you want to read a book in one day. Learn Some Basic Things About the BookBefore reading the book, try to “get a feel” of it. Instead of reading the (boring) introduction, you should do the following:
So, the first thing you do is to learn the basics of the book. Tip 3Use the titles, synopsis, and table of contents to get a basic idea of the plot. Have a Quick Look at the BookNext, just flip through the book — from the first to the last page. You can stop whenever you want if you see something interesting. Take a look at the tables, graphics, and illustrations, if there are any. Read the subheadings. Let your feelings be your guide, and read everything that grabs your attention. While going through the book, try keeping in mind your primary goal. Constantly repeat the most important question about it in your head. By doing so, you create reference points or “anchors” in your mind which will help to find the information you need. Tip 4Don't read the whole book — just browse through it. Look for specific answers to your question and skip all irrelevant stuff. Beginning and EndThe most important information in a book is often found at the beginning and end. The readers formulate the conclusion themselves. If you haven't answered all your questions after browsing through the book(Tip 4), read the beginning and the end of it, including the beginning and the end of the chapters. The latter may hold some important clues to answering the main question. You may be surprised, but that’s pretty much all you need to catch the essence of a book. Tip 5Read only the first 3-5 pages of the beginning and the end of the chapters — that’s where the most important information is frequently contained. Note-TakingGet a pen and a sheet of paper ready. Why? Because things that we put down on paper stay longer in our head and are perceived better. That is why note-taking can help you develop your speed reading skills more effectively. First, write down your reading goals. The best way to do that is by asking questions. Then, put down the answers you found in the book, including page numbers (that’s if you want to delve deeper into the book and investigate a certain issue in depth). Tip 6Take notes by formulating your questions and writing down the answers to them.
Well, this is it — you now know how to read a book in a day! I hope that by applying the above recommendations, you’ll be able to boost your speed reading skills easily.
