Help the Environment by Traveling SmarterWe all move around a lot during the day. But has it ever come to your mind that every time you go somewhere, you affect the environment? As simple as that. So, is there any way we can reduce our ecological footprint? It turns out there is an art. 1. Use Your Car LessDid you know that your trip to the nearby store can leave a more dramatical imprint on the environment than a journey around the world to get your favorite food from here? Avoid using your car as often as you can. Instead, ride a bicycle and give yourself a good workout. If you really depend on your car in terms of grocery shopping, you should only use it on the route to or from your work. And why not call your neighbor to check whether they need something, too? Next time it will be you who won’t have to use your car to go shopping. It is short car trips that release the most CO2, so if you manage to skip a few rides during the week, you will take a first step toward reducing the environmental impact. 2. Cycle to Office or Work From HomeYou will make our planet and your body really happy if you leave your car at home and cycle to work. If you have to travel long distances or got no shower at work, maybe an electric bike will be a solution? Not going to work at all is clearly a major advantage from an environmental point of view. Progressive-minded and ecologically aware managers are quite OK with people working from home. If it’s not the case with your company, you should check if it is included in its environmental policy. If it isn’t, you should probably get a new job. Taking a train/bus or walking to work are also excellent options. If you cannot live without a car, consider car-sharing or buying an environmentally-friendly vehicle. 3. Take Your Kids to School Without Damaging the PlanetDriving your kids to school is convenient. But don’t you have a guilty conscience afterward? If you do, take a look at the below options. Walk Your Children to SchoolYou and other parents in the neighborhood can take turns walking kids to school. It is environmentally friendly, refreshing, and brings a lot of fun. You’ll also have plenty of time to talk to your kids about the importance of not using a car. Have Your Neighbors Drive Your Kids to SchoolMaybe your neighbors will be OK with driving your kid to school? Just check things out with them. Use a School BusIf your kid’s school is too far off, you may be entitled to a shuttle. So, why not take it? 4. Pick a Vacation Spot Closer to Your HomeWe always pick countries with a hot climate to spend our vacation in. But the longer we travel there, the more we affect the environment. To reach our destination, we often have to take multiple steps, and that means generating a lot of greenhouse gases. Did you know that a round trip flight to Thailand results in 2.2 tonnes of carbon dioxide being released in the atmosphere? It is almost as much as an ordinary car emits in a year. Therefore, try picking a vacation spot close to home and only treat yourself to a long haul flight once a year Of course, the best thing would be to skip it altogether and choose other ways to travel (e.g., a train). Sure, it takes longer, but your journey becomes an experience in itself: you make new acquaintances, you have delicious meals in the dining car, and watch magnificent landscapes flashing by. But why go to through all those troubles if we can have plenty of fun at home? Here are some examples to tickle your holiday fantasy:
To sum up, we all must do our best to preserve the environment. However, our efforts alone are not enough. Therefore, the Nature Conservation Association is working hard to get politicians to make the necessary decisions.
